The Asian Natural Environmental Science Center (ANESC) was established in 1995 with the support of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences and other related institutions, as one of the Shared Facilities open to the University of Tokyo scholars. In April 2005 it will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its establishment.

In 1998, the ANESC published a report on the research and educational activities carried out by the Center during the three and a half years period since its establishment. An introspection and appraisal of its activities during the seven years was published in 2002. Report on external evaluation, reviewed by both Japanese and foreign researchers, was published in 2003.

The ANESC has obtained many competitive research funds including the Grant-in-Aid for Creative Basic Research from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology entitled "The Development of Sustainable Biological Production Technologies Harmonized with Regional Environmental Conditions in East Asia", which was started in 1995. Staff members of the ANESC have promoted research collaboration and have organized symposia with many overseas universities, particularly in Asia.
